What is it?
Video on Demand (or VOD) describes a viewer watching video content either streamed or downloaded to a TV, PC or mobile device. It does not rely on broadcast schedules.
On TV, VOD is delivered via a set-top box on either a pay-per-view basis (such as movie rentals of one-off sporting events), or via a monthly subscription charge.
Push VOD (used by Sky and Top Up TV) sends a range of content to the set-top box for the viewer to watch at anytime. Pull VOD (used by Virgin Media and BT Vision) relies on requests by the viewer for particular content to be sent to their set-top box.
Consumers can also access on-demand TV via the internet.

With Video on Demand, the viewer is in control and has personally picked the content to watch. This makes the experience much more engaging than with linear-broadcast content.
